Falls Landing Foundation, Inc. The Early Settlers - Your Genealogical Connection? Approximately 20 families accompanied Clark down the Ohio and landed with him on Dunmore Island (later dubbed Corn Island) on May 27, 1778. Dr. Henry McMurtrie identified the heads of some of those families in his book "Sketches of Louisville" published in 1819: James Patton Clark was happy to have these men and their families since "they were of little expence, and with the invalids would keep possession of this little post until we should be able to occupy the main shore...." After Clark's initial victories in the summer of 1778, a number of his men elected to return to the Falls for discharge. Col. William Linn (of Linn Station fame.....well known to Louisvillians!)) conducted this group back to Corn Island. No doubt some of them remained there since Clark asserts that by this time greater numbers of people were descending the Ohio toward the Falls. Other early settlers include:
